CHAPTER FIFTEEN
KIRA
The dental practice of Miles Grant & Associates, DDS, sat in a dingy building in Lynchburg. Iâd been after him for years to move to a better location, but Miles had gone to school with the guy whose dad owned the building. With Miles, a lifetime of acquaintance with someone equated to a lifetime of obligation.
I yanked the transmission into park and got the kids and their backpacks out of the car. They moved like turtles until I grabbed both their hands and dragged them behind me as I headed in.
âGood afternoon, Sandy,â I sang through my gritted-teeth smile. As usual, Sandy wore her hygienistâs coat over a tight V-neck sweater that showed off her titsâso huge and crammed together that Miles could probably stick his wandering joystick down in there and get his jollies just as easily as he could in her other orifices. Trust Sandy to make options available! She had a new hairstyleâeven more like mine than before, down to the long bang in front sweeping off to the side. Did Miles show her pictures? God.
Well, I could exact momentary revenge, at least. âGosh, Sandy, I so hate to do this to you, but my regular sitter is busy and I have an appointment. I canât take the kids. You donât mind watching them for a bit until Miles is finished up, do you?â
âWell, actually, Mrs. Grant, I haveââ
Miles came around the corner. I had to admit itâhe was good. He didnât even glance Sandyâs way. âHey, hon. Whatâs up?â
âSandy here offered to keep an eye on Finn and Fiona until youâre done. Such a sweet thing to do. I have to go see Allison this afternoon. A checkup,â I said, using code for him on the off chance he hadnât told this adulterous tooth scraper that his wife might soon safely be tucked away as a guest of the state correctional system. I wondered how sheâd like watching the kids full-time if I went to prison.
Miles and Sandy exchanged looks.
âHon, Iâve got one more filling to do this afternoon, and Sandy has a couple more cleanings.â An older gentleman in the waiting room glanced between Miles and the kids apprehensively, as if imagining Miles drilling his molars with Fiona clinging to his leg. âI donât know if thereâs anyone who canââ
âOh, Iâm sure theyâll be fine. Isnât Martha doing books in the back? Let them watch a video on your computer. Or do their homework. That would be even better. Iâve got to go or Iâll be late. See you for dinner. Why donât you pick up something at the Thai restaurant?â
âMommy! I donât like that spicy food! I want McDonaldâs!â Fiona screwed up her face as if Iâd suggested she eat a live octopus.
Fine. I made a note to stop by Fresh Market for sushi for myself. Miles would give in and take them to McDonaldâs.
âKira, I canât . . . You should have called. Weâreââ
âGotta go!â I breezed out the door, leaving Fiona
